Featured Mentor: John Domini
We are excited to announce our featured mentor of the week: John Domini! John has published four novels and three books of stories, as well as a memoir, a selection of criticism, and a poetry chapbook. The latest is his memoir, The Archeology of a Good Ragù. 2021. Praise came in American Book Review and elsewhere. Among his novels, the most recent is The Color Inside a Melon, 2019, with blurbs from Salman Rushdie and others. The novel completes a loose trilogy set in Naples, Italy. His latest collection of stories is Movieola!, 2016. The Millions called this "a new shriek for a new century.”
His books have appeared in Italian, and he's done translation himself. He's appeared in anthologies in all genres, and in Paris Review, New York Times, and other places. Grants include an NEA Fellowship, and he's taught at Harvard and elsewhere. He lives in Des Moines, Iowa.
He spoke on his previous experience with a the mentorship program and what he’s most excited for this time around: “The mentorship program has proven rewarding for me. I've seen the people I work with improve excitingly–at least two of them breaking into print after our sessions. Such publication, however, is hardly the only payback…It's always a pick-me-up to rediscover the magic and potential in basic elements like the point of view or the tenor of the rhetoric–and in the process, get stung again by storytelling’s inexhaustible vitality.”
The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store by James McBride is a book John read recently and loved, “finding it just scrumptious in all respects.”
