about the author

In 2003 she published her first novel The Long Haul (Soft Skull Press) to critical acclaim. The San Francisco Chronicle wrote of Stern’s metaphors, “they’re so fresh, they’re almost jarring.” Concurrent with the publication of her novel, she launched “The Happy Ending Music and Reading Series.“ The show, running for nine years now, has welcomed over 700 artists. Among them: Richard Price, Aimee Mann, James Salter, Etgar Keret, Andre Dubus III, Michael Cunningham, Sarah Jones, Vampire Weekend, Mark Eitzel, Moby, Karen Russell, Tea Obreht, Laurie Anderson, A.M. Homes, Rick Moody, John Cameron Mitchell, Jennifer Egan and Colson Whitehead.  For several years, Stern curated, produced and hosted this monthly series at NYC’s premiere performance venues.
