Featured Mentor: Shya Scanlon
We are excited to announce our featured mentor of the week: Shya Scanlon! Shya Scanlon is the author of the novel The Guild of Saint Cooper and the poetry collection In This Alone Impulse. He received his MFA from Brown University. His essays and short fiction have appeared in Lit Hub, Guernica, The Literary Review, The Mississippi Review, The Believer, The Rupture, Hobart, and elsewhere.
“I enjoy helping writers discover their voice and hone their craft,” Shya said when asked why he enjoys being involved in the mentorship program. “Guidance and encouragement, both from established writers and peers, was extremely important to me as I began writing, and continues to be important. Writing can be a lonely business, and any opportunity to build community around it is always welcome. I'm happy to have the chance to see what other writers are working on, and I'm hopeful that by sharing my thoughts and observations on their work my mentees will feel supported and inspired.”
Sirgid Nunez's loose trilogy including The Friend, What Are You Going Through, and The Vulnerables take the top spots on Shya’s recent favorites. He says on the trilogy: “Shot through with humor, compassion, and wisdom, reading these nerdy, autofictional novels feels like having an intimate conversation with a stranger you immediately feel like you've known forever.”
